 Aflame
for Kids is a mentoring partnership between
Orange Park United Methodist Church and W.E.
Cherry Elementary School. With the approval of
the church board and outreach mission, it began
in January , 2007 and has grown each year.
Each mentor is assigned one child, based on the
needs of the child and the interests and skills
of the mentor. Children are selected by the
classroom teachers in consultation with the
reading teachers. The mentor spends one hour
per week during the school year at the school
with the child. The time is negotiated between
the mentor and the classroom teacher, but it
will always be between 7:30 A.M. and 3:00 P.M.
Many mentors come at the lunch hour.
Mentors select a prayer partner from the
congregation to support them as well as the
child and the school.
Training, a supply bag and ongoing support is
provided by the program coordinators, Mary
Cook and Pat Dean.
Though the mentor only agrees to volunteer for
one school year, he or she is encouraged to stay
with the child as long as the child is at
Cherry. Changes can and have been made to make
a more constructive match or to meet the needs
of the mentor.
Staff at W.E. Cherry have been very supportive;
they have honored us with a volunteer breakfast
and with bright red T shirts.

helps the families with emergency needs

project. (We are exploring some ideas at
this time, but no firm plans are in place.
